Our Approach

Your skin is one of your most crucial defenses against an increasingly hostile environment. There are so many new and hostile elements that we are exposed to, quite literally, every single day.

It’s very hard to keep up with the new acronyms that seem to crop up constantly: PCBs, BPGs, BPHs, PFAs, CFCs, and CCAs, to name just a few.

With all of these new environmental toxins, why would you use a skin product containing additional synthetic chemicals that are used just because they make a product cheaper to manufacture? Or products that are designed for the maximum profit, convenience, and long shelf life, for some huge, faceless corporation?

Many folks are unaware of some of the compounds being used in many skincare products. Sure, some of the most harmful chemicals are used in small amounts, but the solution to pollution is not dilution! As if a small amount of something harmful, used EVERY DAY, won’t cause problems for some people’s health.

That’s a pretty poor moral and ethical philosophy.

Good Botanix has a higher standard that is grounded in the belief that what you put on your skin is likely as important for your health as the food you eat every day. That is because the primary thing stopping a substance that gets on your skin from reaching your bloodstream is the size of the molecule. Period.

Our Story

Our story begins from simple roots. Our journey started because of the need for a product to help joint aches and pains. Our local health food stores were always running out, or were in very short supply, so my wife suggested that I might have a try at making my own.

So after some research, some experimentation, some moderate successes and some humorous failures, I came up with something useable that I was pretty happy with.

One day, when my wife had just run out of her moisturizer of choice at the time, she decided to use the product I had made for my own use. She remarked at the time that she really liked how it felt on her skin, and made the suggestion that I might try to make a product to suit her particular needs.

That was the beginning of what became something of an obsessive quest to create a product to suit the entire family’s various needs. As time passed, and I dug deeper and more thoroughly into the science and experimentation, I began to realize two important things about skin products and the industry in general.

One is that the skin is actually less of a barrier than it is a bridge inasmuch as it can handily absorb a great many things. The second is that there are many chemicals used in the industry that are very questionable when it comes to your health if they fully make it into the lower dermal layers or worse yet, your bloodstream. This holds true for literally everything you might use on your skin or hair.

We all think about the food we eat and the impact it has on our overall health, but what about the products we use every single day on our skin? Every. Single. Day. The stark truth is that most folks never really have thought about it, or are completely unaware of the impact it can have on our health.

I am about to tell you.

If a compound, good or bad, has a low enough molecular weight, then it can easily make it to the bloodstream and thus your entire system. Once assimilated, the body must metabolize it for health or harm. Period.

There is a general rule of thumb in medical circles called “ the 500 Dalton rule”, which refers to the threshold below which the skin may be effectively penetrated by a molecule.  This principle is used very commonly these days; there are many topical drugs that make handy use of it. In fact, we make very good use of this: if a healthful compound is bound to an oil, your body can more easily benefit from it. That’s one of the precise reasons we only use the absolute best organic and unrefined oils we can find.

I will sum this up by saying that lipophilic (fat-loving) molecules, especially with a PH between 4.5-5.5, can easily make it deep into the dermal layer and therefore to your bloodstream. This fact is commonly used in skin products, particularly serums, to make a product more beneficial. Or dangerous. I suppose it depends on exactly what is IN that product.

So, I founded Good Botanix based on these facts as a guiding philosophy. We study every aspect of every single ingredient we use in our products. Not just the chemistry either. If you really want to know whether something is healthful or harmful, you’ve got to take a serious look at the appropriate medical studies that pertain to it.

All of that being said, there is a ton of stuff that we will just never use in a product. Period.

However, the elements we DO use will always be carefully chosen and vetted for the positive attributes they bring to a product. It’s a pretty simple concept. We prefer to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

One of the caveats for us is the fact that we will never be able to produce a product that can sit in a warehouse or on a shelf for years. Since we only use unrefined and organic certified botanical oils, this means the products we make for your use will be of recent manufacture; but we see that as a good thing. We think you will too because results speak for themselves.
